This is an important point to address, especially as the need use of ACs keeps increasing. Although the decommissioning and disposal of refrigerant gases is regulated and decently managed in some parts of the world, it certainly is not in many of the areas we operate in, and it results in much of the gas of ACs we install being eventually released in the atmosphere. As a reminder 1kg of R410a (most commonly used gas in ACs currently) released is equivalent to about 2 Tons of CO2.
Changing to better gases can help but also comes with significant constraints linked to the procurement of equipment, spare parts, etc...
I think the priority should be put on reducing the number of systems installed that we install, through better sizing (load estimations), and improved building design (insulation, radiation reduction measures, etc...)
Additionally, it's important to remember that these systems generally contribute to about 50 to 70% of our energy loads and consequent fuel consumption.
