Reducing MSF OCB Carbon and Environmental Footprint

MSF OCB is aiming to achieve a 50% reduction in its CO2 emissions. To achieve this, we are reaching out to the entire OCB community for concrete proposals.

This platform is provided to us by our partners at the Climate Action Accelerator. It serves 2 purposes:

  1. To gather and facilitate discussion on concrete CO2 reduction proposals
  2. To provide transparent insight into the process by which we are designing OCB CO2 reduction roadmap

Discover how you can do your part and learn more about our methodology below.

🌡 Why?

Climate change is a matter of concern for our association, because the most vulnerable populations and the poorest countries pay the highest price while being the least equipped to respond. That is why, even if the fight against climate change is not necessarily our fight, we must nevertheless limit our contribution to this phenomenon.

🌡 How?

This initiative is organized with the help of the Climate Action Accelerator (CAA), who have previously supported organizations like MSF OCP & OCG, ICRC, DCAF, and ALIMA in similar processes.

In collaboration with CAA we have developed a methodology that begins with measuring our current footprint and crowdsourcing best-practice proposals (this is where you come in!). Then we will synthesize the proposals into feasible solutions and adopt a roadmap to apply these solutions in order to meet our targets. The process is broken down into the following 5 phases:

  • Phase 1: Methodology adjustments
  • Phase 2: Consultation & State of affairs
  • Phase 3: Impact and Feasibility
  • Phase 4: Target-setting
  • Phase 5: Trajectory and Narrative

You can read about the different phases in more detail HERE.

This platform invites you to participate in phase 2. The most effective roadmap we can create as an organization is one that is created, owned, and implemented by all of us together. Through the "Phase 2: Consultation" tab, we can all contribute ideas, proposals and suggestions to improve OCB's environmental record. You can comment existing proposals on their relevance and feasibility, add your own ones, or raise the profile of a proposal by clicking the support button.

The CAA already uploaded some solutions, some previously identified by OCB and complemented by recent work with OCG and OCP. Those solutions are there to guide conversations and get your inputs and comments on them as well as new solutions if you want to add on the proposed ones.

We will work out a final roadmap together with the Climate Action Accelerator through the next phases. Ultimately the decision on which proposals are adopted will be based on a thorough feasibility assessment.

You will be able to follow the next steps of this initiative through OCB’s intranet.

🌡 What do I do?

You can contribute in 3 main ways:

  1. Contribute ideas and proposals to the platform, particularly on their feasibility.
  2. Support and comment on existing ideas and proposals on the platform.
  3. Encourage your colleagues to join the discussion!

All the proposals will be examined and looked at. The amount of support for proposals will also be a helpful indicator for their popularity.

Submit, discuss, and show support for proposals here.

🌡 Questions?

We will be publishing and updating an FAQ document as we go. For any further questions on the platform or the initiative, please contact Robin Vincent-Smith until the 4th of July, and Maria Ten Palomares afterward.
