IT equipment plays an important role in the success of operations. Obsolete or defective hardware will bring with it compatibility and security problems, frequent breakdowns, and difficulties in restocking consumables and components. All of which can stress out the staff.
However, with good maintenance and if the equipment is used with care, it is possible to extend its lifespan. MSF policy today is to replace computers after 3 years but it could be extended to 4-5 years as long as there are no security and compatibility issues.
The purchase of Fairphone, instead of Samsung or iPhone, should be investigated. Fairphone is known for longevity, easy repair, and modular upgrades, reducing e-waste and choosing fairer materials.
Considering using free open-source operating systems and software should also be considered whenever possible (when you don't need Excel): nowadays a considerable amount of good-quality hardware is not passing the test for Windows 11 compatibility, but is working fine with Linux. Let us avoid to throw out material that is in working conditions for many more years.
Before talking about reduce reuse recycle, let's make sure we use muche longer - twice as much is not a dream.
